To reach net zero, Australia must combine deep emissions reductions with large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere. The Australian Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Roadmap sets out how Australia can meet this challenge, accelerate the deployment of novel carbon removal technologies and position the nation as a global leader in this emerging field.

Australia is well placed to lead in novel carbon dioxide removal. We already have mature conventional CDR approaches in use today, and we hold unique advantages in natural resources, research capability, and renewable energy. Building on these strengths, the roadmap outlines Australia's potential to develop novel CDR.

It estimates the capacity and cost of a selection of novel CDR approaches, and identifies the next steps required to develop and deploy them at scale in Australia. The following approaches are considered:

  • direct air capture and storage
  • biomass carbon removal and storage
  • ocean alkalinity enhancement
  • enhanced rock weathering.

The roadmap provides a national evidence base to support the transition to net zero emissions and beyond, identify regional opportunities, and foster deeper engagement and partnerships across government, industry, research, and communities.

The novel CDR approaches outlined in the Roadmap mark the next frontier of Australian innovation and industrial development. They offer responsible, scalable and durable carbon storage that can support Australia's net zero objectives while growing Australia's role in international carbon markets.

Please join us to hear from experts from research, industry and government to discover the opportunities for novel CDR in Australia, and the path forward.
