Our newsletter for food, nutrition and health start-ups or SMEs.

Over the last 10 years CSIRO has worked with more than 400 Australian start-ups and SMEs, helping them to gain a competitive advantage by accessing our cutting-edge research expertise and facilities.

This newsletter is a virtual ‘opening of our doors’. Each quarter we will share information about our R&D capabilities, grants and funding opportunities, case studies, consumer and market insights from Australia and across the world, and upcoming industry events.

Research & Development

The CSIRO Nutrition and Health and Food Manufacturing Programs provide a range of R&D services to food, nutrition and health companies. Each newsletter we will shine the light on a few of our many capabilities.

Marketing with food labelling

Food labels such as health claims or nutrient content claims can communicate the nutritional qualities and health benefits of your foods and beverages to consumers, but mistakes can be costly. We assist food companies to interpret and correctly apply food labelling regulations to improve product marketing.

Food composition

Work with us to determine the unique, marketable nutrient composition of your product. At our Adelaide-based laboratories and clinical research facilities we perform both basic and specialized nutrient analyses. Our analyses include, but are not limited to, proximates in food and food ingredients (including protein, starch, fibres, antioxidants and moisture) and glycaemic index testing.

New targets for sustainable, healthy foods

The recent EAT-Lancet report outlines the world’s first targets for global diets which are healthy for people and the planet. The report focuses on reducing foods which most negatively impact the environment including ultra-processed food and food with added sugar.

Grant and funding opportunities

Through the Australian Government's Innovation Connections program, CSIRO Kick-Start vouchers and the Science and Industry Endowment Fund’s STEM⁺ Business Fellowship program, we are able to offer three levels of matched-funding grants of up to $100,000 for research projects and researcher placements that cater to SME businesses of all sizes.

Events

Proteins for food and health: Sustainable alternatives for future food seminar series

This seminar, run by CSIRO’s Food Innovation Centre in collaboration with Food Innovation Australia Limited (FIAL), will provide insights into understanding the potential opportunities to meet the needs of consumers in Australian and Asian markets. With the support of the SME community, industry success stories will highlight how current research activities have application in developing foods for the alternative protein market.
