About the Series:

Hosted by Ben Trevaskis, Research Director for the Advancing Farm Productivity Program within CSIRO's Food and Fibre Research Area, this series explores how research and innovation can support the long-term productivity and profitability of Australian agriculture.

Presentation Abstract:

The Sustainable Station Science project is built on previous initiatives to create a connected network of CSIRO research farms that demonstrate how cross-research unit science can work together toward a common goal on agricultural systems.

Through innovative on-farm research, including bioacoustics, water accounting, natural capital assessment, virtual fencing, and soil science the project generates practical evidence to support more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

Working closely with industry and communities, the initiative aims to turn our research stations into focal points for innovation, collaboration and real-world impact.

About the presenter:

Sabrina is currently a Principal Research Scientist and the Team Leader for the Digital Livestock team, part of the Advancing Farm Productivity Program within CSIRO's Food and Fibre Research Area.

The Digital Livestock team is focused on developing cutting edge sensor and digital technologies supporting the livestock industry. The team is actively engaged with industry partners and is a solutions-focused team tackling a broad range of challenges and opportunities within the livestock sector.

Sabrina is the lead of the Sustainable Station Science project and is more broadly engaged in research focused on development and utilisation of digital technologies that support more productive, sustainable and data-driven livestock enterprises.

Sabrina was also the Target Area Lead for Farms of the Future, supporting coordination of CSIRO capabilities focused on sustainable agricultural systems, with a particular focus on sustainable nutrient cycling. Engagement and networking with researchers and stakeholders to amplify collaboration and strategies supportive of sustainability initiatives was a primary activity for this role.

Prior to her employment at CSIRO, Sabrina was on faculty at the University of Vermont for 11 years. In addition to administrative and teaching activities, Sabrina was engaged in research programs focused on inclusion of seaweed in ruminant diets to improve agricultural sustainability, nutrition & management strategies to support grazing ruminant productivity, and identification & assessment of biomarkers indicative of ruminant nutrition & production status. As a Lecturer in New Zealand, Sabrina research was focused on nutrition & management methods to reduce nitrogen emissions from dairy cattle, and manipulation of the milk protein profile for nutritional benefits.

Sabrina is originally from Northern Ontario, Canada. She holds degrees from the Universities of Guelph and Alberta (Canada) and has practical experience working on commercial livestock farms as well.
