As part of our knowledge series Australian Farming Systems in a Changing World, we are delighted to invite you to the upcoming webinar with our international guest speaker Prof. Pete Smith, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK:
24 March 2026, 9:00 - 10:00 am AEST*: Food and nutritional security, net zero, and nature positive solutions – How can these competing demands be turned into opportunities for agriculture?
Overview: The world is faced with the triple challenges of food insecurity, climate change and biodiversity loss. Improving agriculture will be essential to ensure food security, as well as for ensuring sustainable and profitable income for farmers, but as a significant contributor to climate change and biodiversity loss, solutions are needed that also reduce the impact of food production on climate and nature. The IPBES Nexus Assessment examined the impact of a range of agricultural / food system interventions on the food system, biodiversity, climate change, water and health. Professor Pete Smith will present some outcomes from that international assessment, to show options that could benefit Australian agriculture.
About the presenter: Pete Smith is Professor of Soils and Global Change at the Institute of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Aberdeen (Scotland, UK), Science Director of the Scottish Climate Change Centre of Expertise (ClimateXChange) and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University (Beijing, PR China). His interests include climate change mitigation, soils, agriculture, food systems, ecosystem services modelling and nature-based solutions. He has been a convening lead author on many reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, a Fellow of the Institute of Soil Scientists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a Foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, a Fellow of the European Science Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society (London).
