Unlocking valuable global data for monitoring practices associated with responsible land management
Over the past decade awareness has grown that organisations must better understand, manage and report their interactions with nature. While significant progress has been made in developing nature-related reporting frameworks and standards, a persistent challenge remains: how can organisations use readily available, open access nature-related data to evaluate outcomes of land management activities in a transparent, consistent and robust manner?
CSIRO and BHP invite you to attend an upcoming webinar exploring our development of a practical and transparent approach to addressing this challenge.
The webinar will showcase recent research conducted by CSIRO in collaboration with BHP to advance natural capital measurement, management and reporting through the development of practical methods. These methods can be applied consistently across industries, ecosystems and geographies.
Participants will hear how the project team have systematically reviewed readily available, open access global data to assess its use for nature related monitoring and have worked to:
- develop benchmarks for over 60 variables relevant to terrestrial ecosystem functional groups globally, providing 2020 baselines for ongoing assessment and monitoring,
- map how these variables relate to ecosystem condition typology recommended by SEEA EA,
- develop a Quality Hectare (Qha) index to support the monitoring and assessment of responsible land management practices across geographies and jurisdictions, and
- recommend future directions to support broader uptake by industry.
The webinar is intended to support industry, regulators, environmental bodies and the finance sector.
It will explore how organisations can use readily available environmental datasets to support the tracking of stewardship outcomes over time in a transparent and globally consistent manner.
The approach presented has been designed to:
- Support both natural capital accounting and natural capital assessment applications.
- Provide a transparent and globally applicable methodology for assessing ecosystem condition across space and time.
- Draw on internationally recognised ecosystem classifications and nature-related reporting frameworks.
- Improve the consistency, comparability and defensibility of ecosystem condition information.
- Support practical decision-making associated with responsible land management.

Introduction
Dr Anthony O'Grady
Senior Principal Research Scientist, CSIRO
Anthony has a background in environmental science. Over the last decade he has used systems thinking to address the challenge of natural capital, leading work across the forestry, agriculture and mining sectors. This research effort has focussed on reducing the complexity and barriers to entry for industry. His aim is to drive adoption, enabling a better understanding of the risks and opportunities associated with the economies impacts and dependencies on nature. Anthony is currently a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Futures Council for natural capital.
Phil Cryle
Principal Natural Capital, BHP
Phil will provide an overview of the BHP–CSIRO Pathways to Nature Positive collaboration, outlining why BHP is supporting the advancement of practical approaches to natural capital accounting and assessment, and the role these tools can play in supporting nature-related decision-making.
