This seminar is part of the 6G Security and Privacy Seminars under the 6G Security Research and Development Program. The Program aims to conduct foundational research into the security requirements of 6G technologies and shape the development of 6G telecommunications standards internationally.

Abstract

This seminar will underscore the critical need for collaboration among the related SDOs for 6G security and privacy, a topic of utmost importance in our rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Bio

Dr Heung Youl Youm

Dr Heung Youl Youm, with his extensive experience and expertise, is Chair of ITU-T Study Group 17, Security, from 2017 to 2024. He has been a Professor (Emeritus) at Soonchunhyang University, Korea, since 1990.

He joined ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) in 1982. He had been a senior member of the technical staff working on developing high-speed transmission systems until 1990.

Since 1990, he has worked as a professor for the Department of Information Security Engineering at Soonchunhyang University, Korea. He is currently the Director of the SCH Cybersecurity Research Centre at Soonchunhyang University.

Dr Heung Youl Youm's academic and professional achievements are extensive. He has authored and edited over 7 books in the field of information security, including ‘An Introduction to Information Security (2005)” and “Electronic Commerce Security (1999)”. He has also published more than 150 papers, including 12 SCIE or IEEE EI indexed papers. His leadership roles include serving as the President of the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC) in 2011 and as a general co-chairman for the Asia Joint Conference on Information Security (Asia JCIS) since 2011.

He worked as a commissioner for the Personal Information Protection Commission in Korea from August 2020 to August 2023.

He worked as a Project Manager of Information Security for the former Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and/or the Institute for Information Technology Advancement (IITA) from October 2006 to February 2009.

He was active in the policy advisory committee for the Office of National Security in the Korean presidential office from October 2019 to May 2022 and was policy advisory committee for the Ministry of Interior and Safety from January 2020; serves for Korea Information Security Agency as a Board Director from May 2020 to October 2023, and has been in many (advisory or self-performance evaluation) committees in the area of Information Security and privacy for the Korean ministries: the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) from 2008 to 2016, the Ministry of Science and ICT (including former the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP)) from 2013 to 2019, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MoTIE) from 2015 to 2016. He has been Chairman of the ISMS/PIMS certification committee in Korea since 2007 and was chairman of the committee on information security in the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games from 2015 to 2018.

Dr Heung Youl Youm's academic journey is a testament to his dedication and passion for the field. He received his Bachelor's degree in 1981, a Master's degree in 1983, and a Ph.D. degree in 1990, all in Electronics Engineering from Hanyang University, Korea.

He received the Order of Service Merit from the President of Korea (Republic of) in February 2024, the Service Merit Medal from the President of Korea (Republic of) in April 2020, and the President Award from the President of Korea (Republic of) in October 2014, Certificate of commendation from the KCC (Korea Communications Commission) in December 2009 and December 2015, the Ministry of Science, ICT and future planning in December 2015 and in December 2019, and the Korea Institute of Information security and Cryptology in December 2015, and the lifetime achievement award from AsiaJCIS19 in August 2019.
