CSIRO Education and Outreach are pleased to offer in-service teachers in the Toowoomba, Queensland region the opportunity to experience an open inquiry professional learning workshop.

Open inquiry has long been identified as a useful pedagogical strategy for developing students' knowledge of science, understandings about science, skills for thinking and working scientifically, and dispositions towards science (see for example Tytler, 2007). It may also be taken as an approach to the teaching and learning of technologies and mathematics. Open inquiry requires teachers to hold strong planning and facilitation skills, as well as a good knowledge of the nature of the relevant discipline.

This workshop, delivered through the BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards, will enable teachers to identify their strengths for open inquiry, and provide opportunities to further their understandings and skills through CSIRO Education and Outreach's CREST program.

Certificates outlining the AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers developed, practised, and applied during the program will be provided following the workshop.

Central questions that will drive the professional learning include:

  • What is open inquiry?
  • What do students learn from open inquiry?
  • How do I prepare students for open inquiry?
  • What are the challenges of open inquiry?
  • How can CSIRO Education and Outreach support me to develop my approach to open inquiry?

Educators in the Toowoomba region are invited to join CSIRO Education Specialists for a four-hour workshop at one of the following location and date:

  • University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba campus, Wednesday 20 June 13:00 - 17:00

A letter of support from your supervisor, on organisational letterhead, must be provided prior to commencement of the program. Suggested text for this letter is provided below.
